Director, Corporate Sustainability

Purpose Reporting to the Vice President, Social Impact & Sustainability, leads Scotiabank’s Corporate Sustainability efforts globally, supporting business lines and corporate functions to embed social and environmental considerations into their plans, policies, and procedures in order to create greater value for the business and society.

Lead the development of the enterprise’s ESG-related disclosures to position Scotiabank as a leader on ESG issues.

Support business lines and functions to ensure strategies, plans and initiatives are executed / delivered in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

Liaise with executive management, shareholders, customers, employees and other stakeholders such as government agencies to inform the continuous improvement of Scotiabank’s ESG strategy and execution.

Accountabilities Strategy: Support the development of mid to long-term strategies and their execution to position the Bank as a leader in sustainability across its key markets.

Collaborate with the business lines and key stakeholders including but not limited to Investor Relations, Corporate Secretary, Social Impact team (Canada and IB), Donations and Sponsorships, Global Risk Management and Real Estate to develop a coordinated sustainability roadmap to deliver the Bank’s commitments.

Business and Operations Partner with Scotiabank’s business lines and functional units in the development and implementation of key elements of the sustainability strategy, with a focus on initiatives that have measurable results and help meet key goals.

Work with business partners to manage and/or mitigate real or perceived negative ESG impacts associated with financial products and services.

Improve the sustainability impacts in its operations, advance sustainability innovation that generates financial and social benefits, embed sustainability in the corporate culture.

Stakeholder engagement Advise the bank’s leadership on best practices in ESG and sustainability Engage employees and external stakeholders to advance sustainability at the Bank and in our key markets.

Manage relationships with key ESG investors jointly with the IR team.

Be a spokesperson for Scotiabank’s sustainability & ESG efforts with industry groups Support issues management strategies and tactics with NGOs, customers, and activists where required.

Leverage strategic relationships and maintain a significant external network of contacts Convene stakeholders on a regular basis to share information on evolving issues, how they affect Scotiabank, and the impact that Scotiabank is having and could have on the issues.

Policy and Research Oversee bank-supported or bank-led research initiatives on selected sustainability/ESG policy issues.

Identify and lead studies of relevant public policy issues affecting the bank and its key stakeholders.

Ensure research is communicated and disseminated as appropriate.

Monitor the political and regulatory environment around key societal issues (excluding FI regulatory issues).

Lead the development and implementation of sustainability policies and programs to align with corporate objectives.

Measurement and Reporting Manage and track all sustainability & ESG KPIs, globally; provide regular updates on performance to management Develop and manage sustainability & ESG program communication and outreach, including annual reporting to stakeholders ranging from our Board of Directors to CSR agencies such as Dow Jones Sustainability Index, the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and others.

Lead or support the response to sustainability-related investor surveys (e.g.

Sustainalytics, CDP, MSCI).

Risk and Performance Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.

Create an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk and conduct risk, including but not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management Framework, Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, AML/ATF Global Handbook and the Guidelines for Business Conduct.

Build a high-performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment; communicating vison / values / business strategy and managing succession and development planning for the team.

Education / Experience / Other Information 10 years of experience in Corporate Social Responsibility/Business Sustainability 3-5 years of people management experience A Master’s degree or an undergraduate degree with relevant experience is required Education in a relevant area, such as business, science, law, sustainability, economics, is an asset Experience building and executing on strategic initiatives Experience in a corporate setting or working with corporate clients Experience presenting to senior executives Experience in the financial services sector is an asset Location(s): Canada : Ontario : Toronto Scotiabank is a leading bank in the Americas.
